12 – Not quite home
Comic Blog
This is another comic that’s technically late, which means it’s almost exactly a week after the last one, so it’s technically on time! This time I have a really good excuse – it was my mom’s birthday and we went to the State Fair. With my update pattern so far I can be safe in saying the comic is updated SMuondays. I pulled another all-nighter to get this one out on the correct week, which probably made me look a lot like Rupert does in the first few panels. Luckily, I have some insomniac tendencies and have honed my procrastinating skills over the past few decades, so it was no problem to hit my stride and finish the comic around sunrise!
I really love two things about the third panel. The one that most people will see first is the light effect on the sign. I tried to leave a slight gap between the light and the wall, since you don’t see the full beam in real life, and I think the effect came out well. I probably should have went a few shades more toward white light, but that probably would have blended in too much with the white panel borders. I also made sure to add a little orange tinge to the final panels so it’s not so jarring going from night scenes back to the relatively colorless scenes. The other part of panel three that I love is the awkwardness of Rupert’s wording. It was definitely intentional since he’s basically a big kid, and also incredibly tired right now.
This comic had a ton of details I had to go back and add in again after I saved it as the final version but before I actually uploaded it. That’s something they don’t tell you about illustrating your own recurring characters – they’re made up of several tiny details that are at the same time really important, and easy to forget! The biggest near mistakes for this one were that I nearly forgot the purple spray on the seal, and the all-important leg wound that the entire comic series is based upon! At least I didn’t forget the bottle he received from the previous comic, like I did in the original sketch! If I can ever get access to a scanner and get all of the old comics in, I’ll definitely make a Patreon post about it.
