13 – Barter system
Comic Blog
This comic is pretty huge, so yet another all-nighter to get it done within an acceptable amount of time of my goal! I guess at this point the comic is just updated Mondays, but I’m still aiming for those elusive Sundays. I’ve been working on this one all weekend, but it is the longest yet in both panel numbering and content, and I kept adding in details in the background to make all of the locations feel authentic enough. It was really tempting to finally cheap out and start copying and pasting, but I didn’t!
I like how much this comic demonstrates that I try to give each character their own voice. I try to make it so that every character in the comic, even side characters who will never be seen again, each have their own facial features, attributes, quirks, and manner of speaking. It sounds difficult to keep track of, but when I create characters, I really feel like I get to know them, so it’s pretty easy for me to keep track! At least so far – hopefully I can keep the continuity up once the cast starts getting ridiculous.
In my original sketch, the suit shop didn’t have the example suits on the wall, but I was immediately glad that I drew them in as soon as they were taking form! Something about the wacky arm gestures within the serious suit store makes me laugh. I drew them first, and then wondered if they meant anything in semaphore and looked it up. I was kind of hoping it meant something goofy or accidentally insightful, but it just says “U” “N” “annul”. Annul means “disregard the last letter”, pretty much like a backspace, so they really just spell out “U”. If I ever have to name the store, I’ll probably try to work that in somehow. You hear that, Future Lance?! Something like “Ultimate Neckties” … “Nevermind; we ran out of neckties.”
Oh, and in case anyone was wondering – those aren’t noodles or hair on Rupert’s shirt. Those are just wrinkles. He slept well, but it was on the floor.
