9 – Different worlds
Comic Blog
The comic is a little late since it’s a busy Summer – aside from doing my online job a ton, I also had to do a bunch of other stuff, including dogsitting, my niece’s birthday party, and dealing with the oven not working. I might have been able to finish a simpler comic, but this one definitely needed the extra attention to the art. It took me a while to decide just how to show that it was turning from day to night and still make everything show up well enough. I have the original sketch of the comic and some things are changed around, but I don’t currently have a way to scan it in, so that’ll definitely be a Patreon extra someday!
Today’s comic might not look like much, but a lot of work went into the night effect. I’m sure there was some easier way of doing everything, but first I shaded everything darker, with an orange-ish for sundown and a blue-ish for evening. I added a slightly darker tint for the sundown-lit scenes and a slightly lighter tint for the evening scenes for each of the people and objects to make them stand out like they would in real life. Finally, I added a little shading between the train cars and the train platform to make it clear that they’re separate objects, since they’re pretty large. I tried to make it subtle enough that it wouldn’t be distracting, but prevalent enough to be clear, and you can see the differences below for the final panel. I think it looks much better than the original version, and it’s a nice parallel for the tone of what’s going on in each panel.
